Best Internet Providers in Lubbock, TX

AT&T Fiber should be your top choice for internet in Lubbock, according to our data. AT&T’s fiber-optic internet service offers remarkable speeds up to 5 Gbps, fair pricing starting at $55 per month and monthly promotions like gift cards and discounts with its wireless service. AT&T Fiber also has exceptional customer reviews, receiving the No. 2 ranking for internet providers by J.D. Power in 2023.

Another fiber internet provider we recommend in Lubbock is Vexus Fiber. Covering over a third of the city, Vexus Fiber offers plans starting at just $29.99 per month and multiple multi-gig internet plans. We especially like that Vexus Fiber plans come with Vexus Premium Total Home Wi-Fi, which includes an eero mesh Wi-Fi system, not to mention you can get $50 for every friend you refer to the service.

If neither of these fiber internet providers is available in your area, you should look next at cable internet. Lubbock’s cable provider is Optimum, which offers substantial coverage of the area, speeds up to 940 Mbps, and standalone internet plans starting at $40 per month. Optimum also surpasses the fiber internet providers by offering multiple bundle options, including TV, home phone and even mobile phone services, with bundles starting at $85 per month. We also like that Optimum, unlike many of its cable internet provider counterparts, doesn’t have contracts or data caps with any of its plans.

AT&T also offers its IPBB (a form of DSL internet connection) internet service, AT&T Internet, in Lubbock. If you live in an area where fiber or cable isn’t available, it might be a last-ditch effort for you. However, AT&T Internet comes with a 1.5 TB data cap, and its speeds don’t surpass 100 Mbps.

At the edges of town, coverage from these major providers can start to get spotty. And beyond the Lubbock city limits, internet infrastructure is even more limited. In areas without great wired internet options, you may want to consider wireless internet connection types like 5G home internet, satellite internet and fixed wireless internet. In Lubbock, we recommend checking out Rise Broadband, Verizon 5G Home Internet, Starlink or Resound for alternate options to wired internet.

ISPs offer new customers fresh deals and promotions. For example, choosing any AT&T Fiber plan can get you some sweet discounts, particularly when you pair your internet with an unlimited wireless plan. You walk away with 20 percent off and two services for the price of one. Another deal you might come across with AT&T Fiber is a Visa Reward Card of up to $150, depending on the plan type. Make sure to check back often to see the latest deals and promotions so you can get the most out of your internet plan and save money while you’re at it.

Fastest Internet Providers in Lubbock, TX

AT&T is the fastest provider in Lubbock, with speeds up to 5 Gbps.

The fastest internet in Lubbock is AT&T Fiber, with speeds up to 5 Gbps. While the only drawback of this service is that the infrastructure isn’t available in every part of town, if you can get it, it’s hard to beat AT&T’s collection of fiber internet plans. In fact, AT&T Fiber has five different speed options, so you can find the speed and price that matches your needs. If you do go with the Internet 2000 or Internet 5000 plan, you can get access to AT&T All-Fi, which comes with free extenders and AT&T ActiveArmor advanced internet security.

Of course, Vexus Fiber also has multi-gig speeds in Lubbock, and it is a suitable alternative to AT&T Fiber if you can access it at your address. With Vexus Fiber and your eero Wi-Fi router setup, you can manage your network and eliminate dead spots entirely.

Outside of these fiber internet providers, Optimum is a gigabit internet provider in Lubbock with speeds up to 940 Mbps. However, Optimum will fall short in comparison when it comes to upload speeds, as it can only reach upload speeds up to 35 Mbps due to its cable internet connection. If streaming, gaming and uploading a lot of files aren’t your internet priorities, then upload speeds won’t be a major concern for you.

If none of these wired options are available, you’ll have to start thinking about wireless options. Verizon 5G Home Internet offers the fastest wireless option in Lubbock with speeds up 300 Mbps, but throttling and limitations can prevent you from getting the top advertised speed with this provider. Satellite can have similar problems, but Starlink now offers speeds up to 220 Mbps without data caps, making it a reasonable option in remote edges of the Lubbock area.

Internet Availability in Lubbock, TX

There are some very good internet providers available in Lubbock, but availability isn’t consistent all across the city. Depending on your area within Lubbock, you may or may not be able to sign up for one of our top recommendations.

The most widely available service provider in Lubbock is Optimum, which covers 84.3% of the city’s area. In practice, that accounts for the vast majority of Lubbock’s residential areas. Many of the spots that seem to be missing from Optimum’s coverage footprint are actually places like parks, industrial areas, and even empty space.

The big question in Lubbock is whether you’ll have access to fiber internet. To get fiber, you’ll have to live within the service area of either Vexus Fiber or AT&T Fiber.

Vexus Fiber’s availability footprint is broad but a little inconsistent. For example, you’ll find Vexus in Downtown Lubbock, but access will vary literally from block to block. Vexus’ fiber network reaches far beyond that downtown area, but it often hews closely to certain roads, especially major arterials. South and west of downtown would be two examples of major arterials. Vexus serves blocks bordering Avenue S as well as blocks that touch 34th Street. However, it does not serve most blocks inside of the corner formed by those two roads. In places like the Heart of Lubbock and South Overton, you may find that you can get Vexus Fiber while your neighbors can’t — or vice versa!

Once you get beyond the 289 Loop (particularly to the west and south), you’ll find that Vexus Fiber’s network is a little more robust. Neighborhoods like University Pines, Meadows South, and Bacon Crest are all pretty well served by Vexus, as are the neighborhoods along the Levelland Highway, like West Carlisle.

AT&T Fiber covers many of the very same areas, and it has a bit more availability within the loop, particularly in areas near Texas Tech and around the Maedgen Area, where Vexus’ coverage isn’t quite as good. If you don’t have access to Vexus, be sure to check to see if AT&T Fiber is available.

There are some far-flung areas of Lubbock without many decent options for internet. In those areas, you may want to consider wireless options like satellite or 5G home internet. First, though, check for AT&T Internet (AT&T’s DSL network). It’s available pretty far out and is still a better option than most wireless internet providers.
